IELTS speaking part 1 snacks

Here’s another part 1 topic with some example answers, and audio to help give you some ideas on how to answer the questions. Remember these answers are just to give you some ideas, and make sure you are not reciting over-prepared answers in your IELTS speaking exam. Try to keep everything natural, and remember the speaking exam should always be informal, and not academic. As well as that don’t go trying to push inappropriate idioms or academic into your answers thinking that this will impress the examiner. I see too many students trying to do this, and actually haring their overall band score. Part 1 topics, and questions are all simple, basic question, so don’t go trying to complicate it!

Part 1 snacks – Questions

  • What kind of snacks do you like to eat?

“Well, I’m actually quite health conscious, so I try to stick with more nutritious snacks, such as fresh fruit or nuts….although I do like to treat myself to a chocolate bar or some ice cream now and again.”

“Oh, to be honest, I’m a bit of a snackaholic, and always love to be munching on some kind of snack. I’ve always got a supply of snacks in my bag, and like just about anything, from candy to potato chips, and often grab a hotdog or cupcake on my way home from class.”

  • When do you usually eat a snack?

“I normally grab a quick bite to eat mid-morning, and usually have something like a cereal bar, or sometimes make a fresh smoothie if I’m at home.”

“If I’m busy with study/work I’ll always try to take a quick break and have a snack, which helps to keep my energy levels up. If i’m feeling very hungry, I’ll often make a sandwich with whatever I can find in the fridge.”

  • Do you think it’s healthy to eat snacks?

“Well, I think it’s perfectly healthy, once you are eating the right kinds of snacks. Snacking on some fresh fruit or a freshly made smoothie is not only healthy, but also gives us an energy boost.

However , there are of course many unhealthy snacks containing a lot of sugar, as well as other unhealthy additives, and very often high in calories.”

  • Did you often eat snacks as a young child?

“Yes, I always loved snacks as a kid, especially candy and chocolate. However, my mother was always pretty strict about not eating too much candy or fizzy drinks, and used to encourage me to eat more fruit, as well as other healthy snacks.”

“Yeah, as a young kid I used to spend all my pocket money on candy and fizzy drinks, as well as any other kind of unhealthy snacks I could find. I remember as a teenager, I started to have a few problems with my teeth, and after too many painful trips to the dentist, I became more careful of what I ate.”

  • Are there any famous snacks/popular snacks from your hometown?

ielts speaking part 1 snacks“Yes, there are some very traditional, and I guess kinds of famous snacks from my hometown, especially desserts,  for example _________ which is made from a kind of sweet and sticky rice, with some fruit inside, and is very tasty.”

“Yeah, in the evenings it’s easy to find many different street stalls selling many different types of snacks, and many of the locals love to sit on the pavement, watching the world go by, as they enjoy their favourite local snack.”

Have the kinds of snacks people eat today changed from the past?

“Yes, I think today the  most popular snacks are usually the same kind of highly processed, and sugar laden snacks that seem to be pretty similar the world over”

“Yeah, there are definitely a lot more western style snacks than in the past, and you can find western style cake shops or bakeries all over the city. As well as that dessert shops have become very popular, especially with young families or teenagers.”
