IELTS speaking part 1 housework

  • Do you help with housework at home?

ielts speaking part 1 dishesA. “Yeah, I always try to do my bit, to help my mother out, and usually clear the table after dinner, as well as washing the dishes. On top of that, I always try to keep my bedroom spick and span at all times.”

B. “Yes, my parents have always insisted on me doing my share of the household chores since I was a kid. I always help out with the washing up after dinner, as well as other chores, like washing the floor or cleaning the windows.”

C. “To be honest I’m a bit of a slob at home, and my apartment is always a bit of a mess, and certainly not neat or tidy. Having said that, I do occasionally make an effort to tidy things up.”

Spick and span: To be extremely clean.

A slob: A person who is lazy, and doesn’t care about cleanliness.

  • How often do you do housework?

ielts speaking houseworkA. “Oh, I do some form of house work just about every day of the week. I always wash the dishes after eating, as well as cleaning the floor. I often help my mother to hang out the washing, and it’s my job to clean the windows at least once a month.”

B.“To be honest, as little as possible, and I’m actually a bit of a lazy slob when it comes to housework. Normally the dirty dishes are piled up in the sink, and only washed when needed.”

C. “I try to help my mother out with some housework whenever I’m at home, which is usually most weekends, and at certain times of the year, for example during the lunar new year, it’s an important tradition to spring clean your home from top to bottom.”

  • Who does most of the housework in your home?

“It would most definitely be my mother, who’s a bit of a neat freak, and likes everything to be spick and span. Of course, the rest of the family tries to chip in, and do their bit to help whenever possible.”

A neat freak: A person who always wants things to be extremely clean

  • Do you know how to cook?

ielts speaking part 1 houseworkA. “To be honest, I have no interest in cooking, and I really only know how to cook some very simple things, such as instant noodles. I guess if it wasn’t for my mother I would be pretty hungry.”

B. “Yes, I often help my mother out in the kitchen, and have learned to cook some really tasty dishes from watching her over the years. My grandmother has also taught me how to cook some very traditional dishes, which I really enjoy.”

  • What can you cook?

A. “I really enjoy cooking, and am actually able to cook many different kinds of things. I love Italian food, and I guess my speciality would be pasta, especially spaghetti bolognese, which I often cook for my family.”

B. “To be honest, I can’t cook to save my life, and anytime I’ve tried, it’s been an absolute disaster. Most of the time I will either eat out, or order some takeaway.”

  • Did you help with housework as a young child?

housework“Yes, for as long as I can remember my parents always encouraged me to keep my room tidy, as well as making my bed every morning. I also remember as a kid I used to help wash the dishes after dinner every evening.”

  • Who does most of the cooking in your home?

“I guess it’s my grandmother, as both my parents are away at work all day, and don’t get home until at least 6.30. Although, on weekends or holidays, my mother will normally do the cooking, and give my grandmother a rest. I’m actually very lucky as both my grandmother and mother are great cooks”
