IELTS speaking part 1 geography
Tip of the day: Remember that the IELTS speaking exam should be informal. You should be speaking naturally, and not reciting over-prepared answers. You are not going to impress the examiner by using inappropriate idioms or academic language in part 1, and this can actually very often lead to a lower band score.
These are example answers to give you some ideas, as well as structure for your IELTS speaking exam.

Did you study geography in school?
“Yes, I sure did, and geography was a compulsory subject throughout my school years, and I guess I started to study it way back in primary school.”
“Yes, geography was actually one of my favourite subjects in school, as I always had an interest in learning more about the world, and still do to this day.”

Are you interested in geography?
“Yes, I’ve always had a great interest and fascination with world geography, and learning all about the different countries around the world is something I have always enjoyed.”
“I wouldn’t say I’m an expert on geography, but I do know my way around a map of the world, as well as having a great love for travel, so yeah….. I guess I do have some interest in it”
“To be honest, I really don’t have any real interest in geography, and used to hate having to study it in school, as well as not being able to read a map to save my life.”

Are you good at reading maps?
“To be honest, I’m actually pretty terrible at reading maps, as well as having an absolutely awful sense of direction, and have got myself lost on multiple occasions.”
“Yes, I think I’m pretty good at reading maps, and can remember as a young kid planning routes with my father anytime we went on a family trip.”
“Well, if it’s a paper map, I would have to say no, but I have no problem using google maps on my smartphone, which can map out the best route to my destination, without the need of any map reading knowledge.”

Do you know the geography of your country?
“I’d say I have a pretty good idea on it, and of course know all the different provinces, and major cities, as well as the more important rivers and mountains.”

Would you like to visit any country because of its geography or geographical location?
“Yes, for as long as I can remember, I’ve had a fascination for travel as well as world geography. One place that’s definitely on my bucket list is the rainforests of Brazil, which I think has to be one of the most amazing geographical locations in the world.”
“Well, to be honest I don’t know much about geography, but I guess I would like to travel somewhere that has lots of beautiful sunshine, and good beaches, so I suppose that the geographical location would actually be important.”

A bucket list is a list of achievements or experiences that a person hopes to accomplish during their lifetime.
Do you think it’s important to study world geography?
“Yes, I think it’s extremely important to learn about world geography, and it should always be a compulsory subject in schools. Climate change is a huge topic today, and to have any understanding of what is happening, it’s vital to have at least some knowledge of world geography.”
