Describe an area of science that interests you – IELTS speaking part 2
Describe an area of science that interests you (biology, chemistry, physics, robotics, computer science,AI,etc.)
You should say:
- What it is
- When and where you learned about it
- How you learned it
And explain why you are interested in it
“Something that I’m really into is AI, as in artificial intelligence, which is a fascinating branch of computer science. I first learned about it back in middle school, during a computer science class. I remember my computer science teacher talked about it and did a few activities that showed what AI could do, which totally blew my mind. I was immediately hooked, and decided to do more research into it in my own time.
I think AI is fascinating because it tries to copy intelligent behaviour from humans. For example you can program the algorithm with a problem, and it will find the solution on its own. It’s kind of like teaching a computer to think for itself, and it’s pretty awesome.
I think AI is so relevant today, because it’s used in so many different ways. You could find AI in things like facial recognition, translation apps, gaming, and even virtual assistants. Who knows, one day, it might even help us discover new medical treatments or cures!
Overall, I’m super interested in AI because it’s creative and innovative, and can really take things to the next level. I’m also really excited to see what new technology comes out of it and look forward to learning more about it in the future.
Thank you.”
- Idioms
To “blow one’s mind” is an idiomatic expression that means to surprise or astonish someone. Example sentence:” His performance blew our minds – we couldn’t believe how talented he was.”
The idiom “to be hooked by something” means to be intensely interested in something. For example: After seeing the first episode of the new show, I was hooked.”
The idiom “think for oneself” means to develop and form opinions and ideas without relying too heavily on other people’s ideas or beliefs. Example: “It is important that kids learn to think for themselves and make decisions based on their own values.”
To take things to the next level means to make something even better or more successful. Example: We’re launching a new marketing campaign to take our business to the next level.
Describe an area of science that interests you – IELTS speaking part 2
Do you think it’s important for children to study science subjects in school?
“Definitely! I believe that science subjects are key to understanding the world around us and can help us to think more critically, which is extremely important.
As well as that, science is also essential for future industries, and without it, we’d be limited to just a few basic career options.
What’s more, there are so many fun ways to learn science and explore its applications. From making volcanoes in the classroom to exciting experiments, children can develop a lifelong passion for science.
Personally,I think that science education in schools should be expanded, to ensure our kids have the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the future.”
Why do you think that some children/students don’t enjoy studying science?
“I think perhaps some kids don’t enjoy studying science because it isn’t taught in an engaging or interesting way. Many times the focus is on memorising facts and equations, or on overly complex concepts that don’t make sense to a young mind, and leaves them confused or bored.
On top of that, I also think one of the biggest problems is that science can sometimes be presented in a very theoretical way, without enough real-world applications. Personally, I think it’s very important to try to make science fun and interesting, as well as applying it to everyday life, in a way that grabs a young child’s attention and interest.”
Which science subject do you think is the most important for children to learn?
“Oh wow! That’s a difficult one, but I think I’m going to have to go with biology. Biology is, I believe, the most important science subject for students to learn.
It’s a great way to understand how living organisms and their environment interact.
What’s more, biology helps us to understand how everything works in the natural world, as well as the importance of conservation, and environmental protection.
On top of that, learning about the basics of health and nutrition gives you the opportunity to better take care of your own body and of your family’s health.
So personally, I think it’s the most necessary subject to have a better understanding of, when it comes to science.”
What do you think was the most important in the past 100 years?
“Wow! There’s been so many, but personally, I think the most important invention in the past 100 years has been the internet.
Since its inception, it has drastically changed the way we live our lives. We can now stay connected with our friends and family, access seemingly infinite amounts of knowledge, as well as online shopping, and so much more.
In short, the internet has allowed us unprecedented access to people and resources, making it a game-changer like no other.”
Do you think that many people enjoy watching science documentaries?
“Yes, I think many people enjoy watching science documentaries. They love learning about various science concepts and discovering how different things work in the world.
I think it gives viewers a very interesting insight into the way our world works, as well as helping us to appreciate the wonders of science.
What’s more, many people enjoy being able to watch educational content in the form of a documentary which is a fun and entertaining way to learn.
Personally, I find that science documentaries are usually so much more interesting, and fun to watch compared to all the silly reality and soaps on TV these days.”
