Describe a drawing/ painting that you like

You should say:

  • When you first saw it
  • Who drew/painted it
  • What it’s about

And explain why you like it

  • Example 1

describe a painting you likeI recently saw this really cool Chinese painting on a trip to the art museum in my hometown and I absolutely fell in love with it!

It was painted by an artist whose name I’m not sure of, but the painting was just so beautiful and detailed.

It was a landscape painting with a lot of mountains, a big river, and a tiny traditional village. The colours were absolutely stunning, and it was almost like the artist had used a rainbow! There were hues of blues, greens, and reds, and each colour just popped off the canvas

I really liked the painting because of the amount of detail, and you could tell the artist had put a lot of effort into it. There were a lot of beautiful trees and colourful flowers in the piece, along with a bridge and a little house, which was amazing. The buildings, trees, and bridge all looked incredibly realistic.

But what really grabbed my attention was the amount of emotion that was conveyed in the painting. Even though I knew it was just an artwork, I could feel the emotions it was trying to illustrate. It had a calming and peaceful feeling, like you were looking at a happy and thriving world.

Overall, this beautiful Chinese painting caught my eye the moment I saw it and I instantly fell in love with it. It had lovely colours, an extremely realistic landscape, and was able to capture the emotion of the artist’s work. Seeing this painting was definitely the highlight of my day and I can’t wait to go back and give it another glance!

Thank you.”

  • Idioms

This idiom means that something was particularly vivid and that the colours used were very strong. Example sentence: The artist’s painting was a masterpiece; the colours popped off the canvas and it was a pleasure to look at.

To “catch one’s eye” means to attract someone’s attention, usually because of something visually striking. Example: The brightly-coloured parrot in the pet store caught my eye.

This idiom is used to describe the most exciting or enjoyable part of the day. Example: After a long day of studying, going out to dinner with my friends was the highlight of the day.

A landscape painting is an artwork featuring the natural elements of the environment, such as mountains, trees, lakes, and rivers. For example, a famous landscape painting is “Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh.

  • Example 2

describe a drawing that you like“I just adore this manga-style drawing by one of my best friends, which she just drew recently. She drew it in amazing detail, and it’s a really cool portrait of a fantasy character.

A beautiful girl with long silver hair and a silver dress is standing on a dark mountain, seemingly looking off into the distance. I think one of the best things about it is how she made use of the shading and texturing of the drawing to make it come to life.

I really admire the imagination behind this drawing, and it’s a spectacular piece of art.The colours and textures she used just jump off the paper. There’s so much emotion and depth in her subject and the colours really give a sense of drama and energy.

The style is really beautiful, and it’s easy to get lost in all the details. I always find myself drawn back to it, and it also makes a great conversation starter. It’s full of warmth and admiration, and really brings out the fantasy world it’s set in.

The fact that it was drawn by one of my best friends only adds to it , and you can clearly see that she put her heart and soul into it. I’m super proud and inspired to have seen it and it’s definitely one of my favourite drawings and I’m sure it will stay that way for a long time!

Thank you.”

  • Idioms

Describe a drawing/painting that you like – IELTS speaking part 3

Do you think that children should learn to draw and paint?

a drawing or painting you like“Yes, I definitely think kids should learn to draw and paint.Creativity and self expression are great skills for children to learn, as well as being a great way to have fun.

As well as that, drawing and painting can be very calming, and it’s a great way for kids to express their ideas, emotions, and interpretations of the world around them.

What’s more between traditional drawings and modern digital tools, there are a variety of creative outlets that kids can explore and really enjoy.”

What do you think are some differences between drawing and painting?

“Well, I guess drawing and painting are two quite different forms of art.Drawing typically involves creating images on paper with a lead pencil, charcoal, or marker.

Painting on the other hand involves the use of paints such as watercolour, or oil paints.

I think perhaps painting allows for more creativity and freedom to mix colours, while drawing is often more realistic.

Drawing is generally more precise and controlled while painting allows for more gesture and abstract styles.

In my opinion, Painting is more open to experimentation ,while drawing often portrays an exact likeness.”

Why do you think that people often like to hang paintings/drawings in their homes?

“Personally, I think people like to hang paintings or drawings in their homes to make it feel like their own personal space.

It adds another layer of expression and decoration to match other furnishings in the house.

As well as that, It also makes the place more cosy and inviting. For example, if someone loves nature, they can hang paintings of landscapes in order to bring some of that beauty into their living space.

Or if someone loves art they can fill their walls with different artwork that speaks to them. It’s a great way to show off your creative side and make your home your own.”

Do you think that it’s important to have art museums?

a drawing/painting that you like“Yes, absolutely, I think art museums are very important because they allow people to explore and appreciate the art of different cultures. Art museums provide an educational and thought-provoking atmosphere to explore the richness of history and art.

As well as that, many art museums offer programs and kids’ activities to help create life-long art enthusiasts.

When I was a kid, I remember how much I enjoyed visiting the local art museum and seeing its amazing collections, and loved seeing the work from my favourite artists.

I believe that art museums can be pretty inspiring and entertaining, and that’s why I believe it’s important to have these institutions around.”
