Describe someone you know who recently moved to a new place

You should say:

  • Who this person is
  • When and where they moved to
  • What the place is like

And explain how you felt about the move

Example 1

describe someone who moved to a new place“My best friend Sarah recently moved to a new place. She’s always been a city girl at heart, so I wasn’t surprised when she told me she was moving to a big city to attend college. She moved to __________, and she’s been there for a few months now.

Sarah says her new place is amazing, and she loves the hustle and bustle of the city, the great restaurants and nightlife, as well as the incredible shopping. She also loves that she can take a subway or a bus to get around without having to worry about fighting traffic.

I was a bit sad when she first told me she was moving, but of course I’m happy for her. She has always wanted to live in a big city and experience a different lifestyle. I know she’s having the time of her life there, and I’m so proud of her for taking this huge step.

Sarah and I are still in touch, and I miss her like crazy. But it’s nice to hear her stories about her new life. I’m actually really excited to visit her soon and explore the city with her, which I know will be an adventure we’ll never forget!

Thank you.”

  • Idioms

This idiom means someone who enjoys the hustle and bustle of city life, even if they don’t necessarily live in a city. Example: “Even though he lives in a small town, he’s a city person at heart and loves the energy of a big city.”

The idiom “hustle and bustle” is used to describe a busy, bustling atmosphere where there is a lot of activity. Example: The airport was filled with the hustle and bustle of travellers getting ready to board their flights.

Example 2

describe someone you know who recently moved to a new place part 2My friend, Lizzie, recently moved to a new place. Lizzie was a close friend of mine for many years before her move. She decided to take a job opportunity in a big city and left our small hometown.

When she first told me about the move, I was a bit taken aback. I was so used to having her around that I was worried about not seeing her as much. We talked about it and of course I supported her decision. I was so excited for her to have a new opportunity and experience a new place.

She moved to the city about a month ago and it has been a huge adjustment for her. It’s so much different from the small town where we both grew up. She’s having to learn the ins and outs of the city and adjust to the hustle and bustle of city life.

Despite the huge change, she’s so excited to be there, and she’s already made some friends and is exploring the city. She’s taking it all in her stride and I’m so proud of her. She’s really embracing the new adventure and is really living life to the fullest.

I miss her a lot, but at the same time I’m so happy that she’s happy. I’m sure she’s going to have a great time living in the new place, andI can’t wait to visit her and explore the city together.

Thank you.”

  • Idioms

To be taken aback means to be surprised or shocked. Example sentence: “She was taken aback when she learned the news.”

Describe someone you know who recently moved to a  new place – IELTS speaking part 3

Why do you think that some people like to keep moving to new places?

“I guess maybe some people like to keep moving around because it gives them a feeling of freedom and adventure. They may enjoy exploring different cultures and experiencing new things.

As well as that, I think that many people also like the idea of a fresh start and the challenge of starting over in a new city or country.

On top of that, moving also allows them to meet new people and make new connections, so they never feel bored or stuck in one place.

Plus,I think it’s just exciting to live somewhere new and discover all the exciting places and opportunities it holds.”

Why do you think that young people usually want to find their own place to live?

“Well, personally, I believe that young people usually want to find their own place to live because they want the independence and freedom that being on their own provides.

As well as that, they want the opportunity to make their own decisions about their living space, lifestyle and the people they have around them.

What’s more, living separately from parents or guardians allows them to explore their own likes and dislikes and form their own identity.

I guess living alone can be a really liberating experience and I know I couldn’t wait to move out from home when I was younger.”

How can parents or teachers prepare young people to live independently?

“I think there are a number of ways that parents and teachers can help young people prepare to live independently.

They can start by teaching them important and useful life skills such as budgeting their money, cooking,as well as other tasks they may need to do on their own.

On top of that, they could also help by giving them chances to practise these skills in a safe, supervised environment, before they move out to live independently.

What’s more, parents and teachers should make sure that young people have the confidence and knowledge they need to make good decisions and stay safe. It’s very important to express that it’s okay to make mistakes and to be honest when they do.”

What are some differences between living alone or living with a roommate?

a person you know who moved to a new placePersonally, I think that living alone gives you the freedom and independence to do whatever you want, whenever you want. You don’t have to worry about anyone else’s opinion or schedule, which is something I think a lot of people like.

Having said that,I believe that living with a roommate can be beneficial too. You can save money on rent, split the household chores, and have someone to talk to and hang out with. Personally, I prefer living with a roommate because it’s more fun and less lonely. Plus, it’s nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of and to help out if you need it.”

What are some important skills people need to learn if they are going to live alone?

“I think that living alone requires a few very important skills in order to make it work. I guess one of the most important is learning to budget and manage finances, and without being able to do this it would be difficult for a uni student or fresh graduate to last more than a few months.

As well as that, being able to cook and clean is also essential, and with today’s high cost of living it’s not practical to eat out every night.

Self-care is very important too, and learning how to take care of yourself emotionally and physically is key.

What’s more, I think that just being able to navigate the city, from knowing how to use public transportation to finding the nearest grocery store will make life a lot easier. “
