Describe an object you think is beautiful

You should say

  • What it is
  • Where it is
  • What it looks like

And explain why you think it’s beautiful

describe an object you find beautifulSomething which I find particularly beautiful is a painting hanging in the living room of my parents home. The painting is hanging above the sofa, and has been there as long as I can remember, perhaps before I was even born. I remember my mother telling me that my grandfather picked up the painting on his travels when she was just a kid, and I guess you could say it’s now like a family heirloom.

It’s quite a big oil painting of a very traditional scene here in Vietnam, and the artist really captured the scene of a very old river town. In the painting you can see a few traditional boats on the river, with some fishermen casting their nets into the water. In the background there are some old traditional houses, as well as some of the locals going about their daily business.

I really love this painting as the artist so vividly captures the natural beauty of the scene, as well as showing how idyllic life was in these little villages. What’s more, it of course, reminds me of my late grandfather, and brings back so many happy memories of growing up at home.

Describe an object you think is very beautiful – IELTS Speaking Part 3

Do you think things today are more or less beautiful than in the past?

“Well, personally speaking, I think in general that most things today are less beautiful than in the past. In the past most things were made by hand, with great care, and often took a long time to make. However today, almost everything is mass produced by machines in factories, and certainly not made with the same love and care as in the past.

I guess some good examples of this would be furniture, and I don’t think it can even be compared to the beautiful antique furniture made in the past.

Having said that, mass production has made a lot of things much more readily available, as well as making necessities such as household furniture cheaper than in the past.”

Do you think it’s important for children to learn about art?

describe an object that you think is beautiful“Yes, I think it’s very important for kids to learn about art, and I believe it should be encouraged by their parents and teachers. I believe that art can help children to develop their curiosity, and imagination which can also help to boost their creativity. What’s more, a country’s art is also part of its culture  and history, which is of course also extremely important for children to both learn and understand.”

Do people in your country like to keep beautiful things in their homes?

“Generally speaking, I would say yes, that most people do love to have some things of beauty in their homes. Many people like to collect beautiful things, such as antique furniture or some old paintings, and often take great pride when these objects are admired by visitors. Having said that, collecting genuine antiques or works of art can be very expensive and most people can’t afford this. However a lot of people settle for reproduction antiques, which often look just as beautiful as the original.”

  • Reproduction antiques

Antiques, often furniture that is made as an imitation or copy of a past style.

Why do you think that some people prefer more modern decor in their homes?

describe an object that you find beautiful“I think, today a lot of people prefer a more minimalist design for their homes compared to the past, and are also often more concerned about functionality, rather than beauty. As well as that, I guess people today have more individual taste than in the past, and have their own personal ideas on what makes a home beautiful.

What’s more, I guess our parents and grandparents usually bought their furniture thinking it would last for the rest of their lives, but these days many people like to constantly restyle their homes.”
