Describe an item of clothing that someone gave you – IELTS speaking part 2
Describe an item of clothing someone gave you
You should say;
- What it was
- Who gave it to you
- What it looked like
And explain how you felt about it
“I think i’ll choose to talk about a beautiful and very fashionable leather jacket my parents gave me for my twentieth birthday. I’m normally not so mad about receiving clothes as a gift, because I have my own taste in fashion, and don’t enjoy having to wear clothes that don’t suit me, or maybe not a perfect fit. However I was absolutely thrilled with this jacket, and not only did it perfectly suit me, but also fit like a glove.
The jacket was brown in colour, and the first thing I noticed was the high quality of the leather, which really was exquisite. It was a waist length jacket, with a soft collar and two large pockets on the outside. My parents could see how happy I was with the gift, and asked me to try it on, and see how it looked. Looking in the mirror I felt like a million dollars, and was bowled over by how great it looked.
I really couldn’t have been happier with the gift, and was also surprised at how my parents knew how to buy me such a perfect gift. Another great thing about this jacket is that it really is a timeless classic that never goes out of style, and I still wear it all the time, happily knowing that it will go with whatever i’m wearing.
Thank you…”
Notes
- To be thrilled
To be thrilled means to feel very happy and excited.
“I was thrilled when I got my results and learned that I had passed all my exams with flying colours.”
- To fit like a glove
To be exactly the right size and to fit perfectly. To be the perfect size and shape.
“She tried on the pair of shoes and was very happy to feel they fit like a glove.”
- To feel like a million dollars

“After getting a new hairstyle and putting on a beautiful new dress, she really looked like a million dollars.”

This means to make a strong impression on someone, or to amaze someone.
“The groom was bowled over when he saw how beautiful his bride looked on their wedding day.”

“Many of the Beatles’ songs can be described as timeless classics.”

We can use this to describe something that is no longer fashionable or obsolete.
“John really doesn’t care about keeping up with fashion, and the clothes he wears are really out of style.”
Describe an item of clothing that someone gave you – IELTS speaking part 3.
Do people in your country enjoy shopping for clothes?
“Well, I think generally speaking that a lot of women really enjoy shopping for clothes, and love nothing better than exploring the many different shopping malls, or browsing some of the fashionable boutiques to be found all over the country today. I think this is especially true of younger women and teenagers, many of whom really love to keep up with the latest fashion trend.
Mind you, I believe that the growing trend of online shopping has perhaps changed the way many people shop for clothes today, and that more and more people are now buying most of their clothes online. A lot of people these days are very busy with work or family life, and don’t have so much time to go searching for the clothes they want, which can be very time consuming.
What’s more, shopping for clothes online is often a lot cheaper, and is something people can do at any time of the day or night, without having to leave the comfort of their homes.”
Is it easy to choose clothes for other people?
“Personally I think it’s extremely difficult to choose clothes for other people, although I guess there might be some people out there who are good at it. I think that most people have their own personal taste in fashion, as well favourite colours, fabrics and style, which would make it very difficult to choose something that they like or even suits them.
Furthermore, to buy clothes for another person, you would need to know what size they are, which is something a lot of people like to keep private, making it very difficult.
Having said that, I guess it’s maybe easier to choose clothes for young children, as they generally have not yet developed a sense of fashion, and are usually easy to please, especially if it’s something with a popular cartoon or disney character.”
Do you think that having to wear a school uniform is a good idea?
“Yes, in my opinion, I think it’s a great idea, even though I realise that so many students would not agree with me. I think that wearing a school uniform can really level the playing field, and can help to remove the peer pressure that many young people, especially teenagers feel when it comes to looking ‘cool’. What’s more I believe that this can lead to a sense of unity and belonging, which can further help the school community.
Having said that, I guess that maybe having to wear a uniform can perhaps dampen creativity, and limit a students ability to express themselves as an individual.
Another downside might be the cost of the school uniform, which is very often expensive, and can cause some economic difficulties for parents. School children are of course still growing, and their uniform must be replaced as they grow out of it.
However , I still believe that in general having to wear a school uniform is a good idea.”
Notes:
- To level the playing field
To make a situation fair for everyone, with everybody having the same advantages and disadvantages.
“I think when it comes to salary and opportunities in the workplace that women are still not provided with a level playing field.”
- Peer pressure
Peer pressure is the pressure you feel to act or dress in a certain way because your friend or people in your group expect it.
“I really think that the popularity of social media has put a lot more peer pressure on young people today, especially to keep up with the latest fashion, or to have the latest iphone.”
