Describe a time you picked up something thrown by another person

You should say:

  • What and where it was
  • What you picked up
  • What you did with it

And explain how you felt about it

a time you picked up something thrown by another personI remember, sometime last summer, I went on a weekend getaway with a few friends to ______ which is a stunning coastal town, a couple of hours away from my hometown.

The first morning, I was out walking on the beautiful beach with my friends when I noticed a group of teenagers leaving behind a pile of trash on the sand.

I couldn’t help but feel a bit peeved as I believe in taking care of our environment, so, I decided to take matters into my own hands and picked up all the trash they had left behind.

I rolled up my sleeves, and started picking up everything from plastic bottles to chip packets. It was not a pretty sight, but I knew it was the right thing to do.

After collecting all the trash, I immediately disposed of it in a nearby trash bin. I actually felt a sense of accomplishment knowing that I had made the beach cleaner and safer for both humans and marine life. I believe It’s important to remember that small actions like this can make a big difference in preserving our planet.

At that moment, I also realised the power of leading by example, and instead of getting angry at the litterbugs, I took action and showed them how easy and important it is to take care of our earth. I hope they learned their lesson and will think twice about littering in the future.

Thank you.”

Idioms:

The idiom “a weekend getaway” refers to a short trip or vacation taken over the weekend.

For example, “We decided to take a romantic weekend getaway to the mountains.”

To be peeved means to be annoyed or irritated.

Example sentence: After waiting in line for over an hour, I was peeved when I found out they had run out of the item I wanted to buy.

The phrase “to take matters into one’s hands” means to take action or responsibility for a situation or problem instead of waiting for someone else to address it.

Example: Sarah was tired of waiting for her landlord to fix the leaking tap in the kitchen, so she decided to take matters into her own hands and repair it herself.

Not a pretty sight is an idiom that means something is unattractive, unpleasant, or undesirable to look at.

Example: After the car accident, the wrecked vehicles were not a pretty sight.

The idiom “a litterbug” refers to a person who carelessly and regularly throws trash or litter in public places, instead of properly disposing of it.

Example: Please do not be a litterbug and throw your trash in the designated garbage cans.

Are there any problems with littering or throwing trash in your country?

littering“ Yes, absolutely, there is actually a major problem with littering in my country. From streets and parks to beaches and rivers, litter can be found almost everywhere.

For instance, plastic bags, bottles, and cigarette butts can often be seen scattered around public areas, which is such a terrible sight. This not only creates an unpleasant and unsanitary environment, but it also harms wildlife as well as polluting our oceans.

On top of that, littering is a serious threat to our planet and future generations, and  I believe it’s crucial for everyone to take responsibility and properly dispose of their waste to prevent further damage to our environment.”

Is it important for children to learn about the harm littering can cause?

“Yes,I strongly believe that it is absolutely essential for children to learn about the harm that littering can cause.

Not only is it important for protecting the environment, but it also teaches important values such as responsibility and respect to kids.

Littering can harm animals, damage ecosystems, and pollute our air and water.

So, I believe it’s vital for children to understand, and to learn about the consequences of littering, as well as learning to take responsibility for keeping our planet clean and healthy.”

How do you think the government could make people more aware of the problem of littering or throwing trash?

picking up litter or trash“Well, I guess it’s a difficult problem to solve, but a very important one. I think that one effective way the government can promote awareness and reduce littering is by implementing stricter penalties and fines for those caught littering.

This would serve as a deterrent for people to think twice before discarding trash improperly.

As well as that, the government could maybe organise educational campaigns and workshops in schools to educate students about the negative impacts of littering on the environment and how they can contribute to keeping their surroundings clean.

On top of that, creating more designated trash cans and providing incentives for proper waste disposal can also encourage individuals to take responsibility for their trash.

For example, in Singapore, a city known for its cleanliness, the government has implemented a strict fine of up to $1,000 for littering. This, along with effective education in schools and public spaces, has significantly reduced the littering problem in the country.

By adopting similar approaches, the government could create a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone.”
