Describe a competition you would like to take part in – IELTS speaking.
Describe a contest/competition that you would like to participate in.
You should say:
- What kind of competition is it.
- What you would have to do.
- How you would need to prepare for it.
And explain why you would like to take part in it.
“I’d really like to participate in a drawing contest, which is organised by my university every year, and the first three prize winners actually go forward to a national drawing contest. I wasn’t so into drawing over the years, but I found that during all the covid lockdowns that it was a great way to pass the time, and really helped me from going stir crazy stuck at home every day during the numerous lockdowns we had.
I recently showed some of my friends a few of my sketches, which are mostly landscapes, and they were very complimentary, and suggested that I enter a competition, which gave me a boost of confidence.
I imagine that the competition would be pretty stiff for this contest, but i feel confident that i’ve really developed my skills enough over the past year or so, and with my friends and families encouragement have been able to get the nerve up to show off my drawing skills in public.
I guess the main reason i’d like to take part in this contest is that i’ve really grown to love drawing, and feel it would actually be a lot of fun to enter, as well as giving me a new challenge which i think i’m now ready for. Another reason is of course the chance of winning a nice prize, and maybe even having my drawing going forward to the national contest, which would really be amazing.
Thank you…. “

1.Why do you think that competitions/contests are so popular on TV today?
“Personally, I think that many people really enjoy watching shows that are competitive, and it gives viewers the chance to feel like they are almost part of the show, as well as getting to cheer on the contestants they like.
What’s more, the contestants on these kinds of shows are also just normal people off the street, and the viewers can perhaps also imagine themselves taking part, and even becoming a celebrity themselves.
I think most people enjoy the idea of becoming rich and famous, so they can fantasise about becoming a celebrity themselves through watching these kinds of shows.”
2.Do you think it’s good to have competition in the workplace?
“Well…. I think it can be a great thing to have competition in the workplace, as long as it’s healthy competition. I believe the feeling of competition can often motivate people to work harder, and often bring out the best in people. On top of that it can add some excitement to an office environment, which I think can be a very boring and monotonous place without some healthy competition….so yeah, I think generally speaking it is a good thing to have some healthy competition in the workplace.”
3.Do you think it’s good for children to learn to be competitive?
“Yes, I think generally that it can be a very good thing for children to learn to be more competitive. I believe children who learn to compete against each other can often, actually do better in school. I think the competition between students can motivate them to do better in their studies, or other tasks they are assigned, which can also help prepare them for their adult life.
Having said that, I do believe it’s very important to make sure that this competitiveness is healthy, and children are always encouraged in a positive way…… it’s very important that children learn to work as part of a team and support each other, keeping the competitiveness healthy at all times.”
